My name is Andrea Lewis, and I am trying to purchase any recordings from a band in which my grandfather played in the 1920's called the "Southern Serenaders".

The Southern Serenaders were an orchestra composed of high school and later college boys who lived in Petersberg, Virginia. My grandfather, Andrew Lee Lewis (deceased), was one of the organizers of the band, which was formed in 1920. The band was very popular in and around Petersberg and throughout the southern part of Virginia and the northern part of North Carolina. In 1927 and 1928, they played aboard Cunard and French Line Steamers and spent a great deal of time in Europe. While there, they played in night clubs and at private parties. During their stays, they were also engaged by the Pathe Phonograph Company in Paris to make some records. My grandfather believed that there were six made. Of those, he could only remember two of the songs that were recorded: "Blue Skies" and "Sam the Accordion Man". The Southern Serenaders at that time were composed of the following persons:

Harry Cooper - Piano
Robert Talmage - Trumpet
Charles Loftis - Trombone
David Cooper - Alto sax and violin
Gaines Goodman - Tenor sax
Andrew Lee Lewis (my grandfather) - Banjo and piano
Charles Ridout - Drums

From my recent research, I can narrow down a few things. This band is NOT Lanin’s Southern Serenaders. I also believe that both of the songs that my grandfather mentioned were on Pat 6986. This was a 78 record, which measured 11 ½ MB and was a vertical recording.

If you have these 1920’s recordings on Pathe by these Southern Serenaders or discographies that mention these recordings available for purchase, I would love to purchase them from you and am willing to pay a good price $$$! Please contact me at with offers or also any information, which might be helpful in my search.

Thank you in advance,

Andrea Lewis
